In addition to my online courses, I provide research classes in other formats. One of my favorite of these involves traveling to a client’s office and delivering a customized class in person.
While these classes usually are set up for the benefit of a prospect research team, gift officers often sit in on this kind of training, too. They generally are interested in learning more about three things: global philanthropy trends, tax incentives for international giving, and the legal issues involved with cross-border philanthropy. Here are some of the introductory resources I suggest they explore.
The International Center for Not-for-Profit-Law
ICNL provides country-specific information about laws that impact charitable organizations and philanthropy. This organization’s website has portals for Latin America and the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Eurasia.
Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS)
The WINGS website includes dozens of publications about philanthropy around the world.
The Council on Foundations: Global Grantmaking resources
This set of resources for US-based foundations includes a section on “global regulation of philanthropy.”
For more than twenty years, Alliance has focused on philanthropy and the social sector around the world. You can search the magazine’s website by theme or location. Some materials are available for free, while others are accessible by subscription.
